How would you describe your volunteering experience?
Volunteering allowed me as an individual with cerebral palsy to become an advocate for my community. By sharing my personal stories, raising awareness, and educating others, I was able to help promote understanding, inclusion, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. Volunteering offered the opportunity for me to inspire and empower others who may be facing similar challenges which I encountered whilst volunteering as many individuals had disabilities or long-term illnesses. By actively participating in volunteer activities, I hope that I was able to show that disability does not limit one’s ability to contribute positively to society.
Volunteering provided me with a platform to engage with the local community. It allowed me to build connections, develop friendships, and foster a sense of belonging. Through my involvement, I was able to challenge stereotypes and change perceptions about disability. Engaging in volunteer work enhanced my personal growth and development. This is because it offers opportunities to learn new skills, improve self-confidence, and develop a sense of purpose. Additionally, volunteering unequivocally provided a sense of fulfilment, knowing that one’s contributions are making a positive difference in the lives of others.
I am also extremely grateful that organisations and communities offer adaptive volunteering opportunities designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities. These opportunities often involve accessible venues, assistive technology, or modified tasks that allow individuals with disabilities to actively participate and contribute.
