Dr Tariq Umar, Senior Lecturer in Construction Project Management from the School of Architecture and Environment (College of Arts, Technology and Environment) at UWE Bristol was among the 30 scientists selected for the The Royal Society Pairing Scheme.

The Pairing Scheme gives policymakers and research scientists an opportunity to experience each other’s worlds.

Each year, 30 research scientists are paired with UK parliamentarians and civil servants. They learn about each other’s work by spending time together in Westminster and the researcher’s institution.

Those taking part gain an insight into how research findings can help inform policy making and come away with a better understanding of how they can get involved.

Dr Umar was paired with James Halpin (civil servant) from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). The Department supports communities across the UK to thrive, making them great places to live and work. DLUHC is a ministerial department, supported by 15 agencies and public bodies.

As part of the reciprocal visits, civil servants from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) and Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) will visit Dr Umar to foster strong links between researchers and policy makers.
