Dr Henrique Tavares Furtado, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations has recently launched a new politics podcast through his work with the British International Studies Association (BISA).
Politics in Brackets has been launched to celebrate the 20th anniversary of BISA’s Post-structural Politics Working Group.
It provides a forum for critical minds in International Relations through a series of roundtable discussions, which aim to investigate, question, and clarify the fundamentals of critical international relations. Each episode will showcase how critical theory can respond to pressing contemporary challenges with a healthy mix of scepticism and hope.
The first episode features Professor Beate Jahn (University of Sussex), Dr Martin Coward (University of Manchester), Dr Lara Montesinos Coleman (University of Sussex) and Dr Doerthe Rosenow (Oxford Brooks University) discussing the question, what’s critical about critical theory?
“I wanted to create content on political theory (from a critical and continental perspective) that was palatable and engaging to lay audiences beyond the University, incorporating the idea that thinking, theorising and research should always be in the service of society.
This podcast is an attempt to pay homage to the classics of critical theory by further democratising the main lessons in their work I sincerely hope this podcast will foreground the truth that thinking, unlike what we are constantly told, is not the benefit of the few but, in fact, constitutes a survival strategy for the many.”
