From Disciplinary Isolation to Programme Leadership: A 36-Year Journey Accelerated by Strategic Support
Dr. Ronke Eyitayo, Senior Lecturer in Information Systems at UWE Bristol, exemplifies the power of combining technical expertise with pedagogical passion. As an accomplished educator and researcher with over 36 years of experience spanning Nigeria, Botswana, and the UK, she has dedicated her career to enhancing digital literacy across all educational levels, from primary schools to universities; while navigating the complexities of being a woman academic in male dominated fields.
Building a Legacy in Digital Literacy
At the heart of Ronke’s work is her commitment to digital literacy education. Since 1995, her textbooks have been integral to Nigerian primary and secondary schools, commended by independent assessors for their readability and high Teacher’s Perception Rating (TPR). These resources continue to empower generations of young learners, fostering a love for knowledge and critical thinking.
At UWE Bristol, where she serves as Programme Leader for IT Management in Business and Co-Programme Leader for Business Computing, Ronke creates vibrant and interactive classroom environments where concepts like project management, strategy, and governance come alive through relatable teaching methods. Her passion for these subjects is infectious, inspiring students to probe and think critically about information systems.
Ronke has meticulously studied digital literacy levels across various disciplines and educational stages, uncovering insights that inform pedagogy and curriculum design. Her interdisciplinary qualifications spanning computer science, information science, management, and library studies, provide a broad foundation for understanding various facets of information management in business and technology. Now, her gaze is toward Generative AI, a transformative force that aligns with her passion for literacy and digital inclusion.
Navigating Academic Challenges
Throughout her career, Ronke has encountered challenges familiar to many women academics, particularly so for black women academics, “As a woman, it has been challenging to cope with raising children, managing teaching and keeping up with research,” she reflects. Juggling so many demands requires constant focus and determination. Additionally, she faced disciplinary isolation, with limited collaboration opportunities within her research area, leaving her professionally isolated despite her expertise and accomplishments.
Yet she approached these obstacles with characteristic resilience. “However, with focus and determination, I have managed to be excellent with my teaching and consistent with my research,” she notes. She achieved this by integrating her research interests into her teaching, embracing continuous professional development through training programmes and workshops, and recognizing the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance while meeting professional obligations.
The Transformative Power of 100 BWPN
The 100 Black Women Professors NOW programme proved transformative for Ronke’s academic trajectory. Moving to UWE Bristol, with its newly established Information Science Cluster, changed everything. “This motivated me to apply to be part of the 100 Black Women Professors Now programme,” she explains.
One of the programme’s core goals is helping participants discover themselves and career plan. Assigned a sponsor, career coach, career mentor, and research funding application coach, Ronke gained access to comprehensive support that addressed every aspect of her professional development that was not available to her before this. “During my time on the programme, I was able to better understand myself and articulate my career plans in writing,” she reflects.
“This network has provided valuable guidance, support and collaboration opportunities, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. It has also led to a wealth of resources, including funding, research tools and professional development materials.”
The programme’s impact extended beyond individual career development. The support and mentorship provided a confidence boost in her abilities to lead, teach, and conduct research. “This is already translating into more effective and impactful academic work, with the goal of achieving my full potential and making meaningful contributions to my field.”
Recognition and Expanding Influence
Ronke’s dedication has earned widespread recognition. She was awarded Senior Fellowship (SFHEA) from Advance HE, accredited professional recognition that evidences how her professional practice engages with the Professional Standards Framework. This achievement reflects her impact and leadership in teaching and learning in higher education, as well as her commitment to continuing professional development.
Her influence extends through multiple channels: serving as a reviewer for reputable journals, acting as a programme committee member for conferences, and serving as an external examiner for universities. Her many positive student reviews testify to her unwavering dedication to teaching and nurturing students’ minds. Beyond the lecture hall, she is a mentor to both colleagues and students, investing in their success and guiding them through complex projects with a blend of rigour, encouragement, and care.
Her research continues to revolutionize how we engage with Information Science, helping to shape students’ critical thinking skills. Her current focus on leveraging Generative AI to enhance literacy and learning experiences aims to create accessible content and foster digital inclusion—demonstrating her commitment to using technology as a force for equity.
