Introduction to Analogue Black and White Photography for Printmakers – 11 & 12 July

This two-day workshop focusses on 35mm black and white film photography and darkroom processes, using analogue cameras and working in a traditional darkroom. Participants will explore the ins-and-outs of manual analogue cameras, how to correctly expose and develop traditional 35mm film, making contact sheets and prints in the darkroom from their negatives to archival exhibition standards.

This course will re-engage artists and printmakers with traditional 35mm film photography and maybe even with their own cameras that have laindormant for a while. It is as much an introduction to analogue photography for newcomers as well as a refresher for lapsed photographers wanting to return to darkroom days of years gone by.

Unblocking your Artist’ Book Block! – 12 & 13 July 2023

The two-day practical course will give participants the time and opportunity to engage with many different creative book-making techniques in order to overcome any creative block. In the first half of the course we will make three completely new books using a variety of generative methods and then in the second half we will concentrate on making a final personal book project using the participants ideas and after consultation with the tutor. The emphasis will be on the enjoyment of creative energy, sometimes working in collaboration with the other people on the course. You will go away with a selection of new books you have created and with the skills and confidence to carry on making in your own time. This course will take place at UWE Frenchay Campus.

Let’s Lino! Workshop – 17 – 21 July 2023

This course is Lino Printing 101. It will give an overview of the whole lino printing process, including drawing designs, transferring designs onto lino blocks, carving and printing. There are many methods of printing to explore: single colour, multiple block, reduction lino printing: the possibilities are endless and importantly, very exciting.

This course will enable any beginner to understand the fundamentals of lino cutting, mark making and translating images into print. It will equip you with skills and techniques needed to continue making your own prints at home.

During this advanced two-day Tetra Pak collagraph print workshop, the course tutor, Stephen Fowler, will facilitate the exploration of multi tetra pak plate prints which explore colour overlay, and the combination of intaglio and relief collagraph print processes. This course is ideally suited to for artists, educators, printmakers, and illustrators who have some experience in collagraph printmaking, or have attended one Stephens previous Tetra Pak printmaking courses before. This course will take place at UWE Frenchay Campus.

Introduction to Woodbury Type and Woodbury Gravure Prinkmaking – 27 & 28 July 2023

Participants will learn how to prepare images for Woodburytype and Woodbury Gravure. They will learn how to use the laser cutter, how to prepare inks for Woodburytype and what inks to use for Woodbury Gravure. Particiapants will use the laser cutter to make plates for Woodburytype and Woodbury Gravure and print with gelatine inks and relief inks.

Woodburytype was the first commercially successful photomechanical reproduction method. It was later replaced by lithography in commercial printing. It is a continuous tone and gives a very special image quality. The continuous tone Woodbury Gravure is even more obscure and has never taken off commercially. Participants will learn about both techniques.

UWE Bristol is entering its third year delivering the Help to Grow: Management course, designed for business owners, managers and senior decision makers of SMEs from all business sectors.

Designed to be undertaken alongside full time work, Help to Grow: Management is a 12-week course consisting of 50 hours of timetabled activities. SME leaders are supported through the course by Bristol Business School lecturers and industry experts, with a focus on combining academic and real-life business experience.

Participants enrolled on the course in Year Three will have the opportunity to enhance their leadership and management skills, learning how to develop responsible business practices and recognising what drives productivity and growth in their market. The course consists of 12 modules in a mix of face-to-face and online learning, supported by weekly peer group calls, 1-1 mentoring, and access to a network of other SME leaders through both local and national alumni networks.

The course is 90% subsidised by the government, costing participants just £750. In the first two years, UWE Bristol has guided over two hundred SME leaders through the course, building on the university’s track record of supporting SMEs across the South West.

I once had doubt in my abilities, but now I am coordinating over 200 volunteers in which delivers surplus food to 400 members across the southwest region. I would not have been able to secure such a role without the support and opportunities given to me by the Green Skills Programme. I am and forever will be grateful for that experience. I highly recommend this programme to anyone striving to achieve positive and impactful change in their life.”

– Zephyr Giddings – Green Skills Learner Zephyr, Green Skills Learner

Black History Month 2022: Skills focus

Posted on

As part of Black History Month 2022, we are spotlighting individuals working around the following themes:

  • Skills
  • Innovation
  • Research
  • Business

This week we are focusing on Skills:

UWE Bristol in partnership with Black South West Network and NatWest are working to deliver the Green Skills for Jobs and Entrepreneurship (Green Skills) programme. This is an initiative funded by the UK Government’s Community Renewal Fund (CRF) and managed by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) on behalf of the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC).

Green Skills is a unique and transformational programme that provides access to jobs, training and business opportunities to Black, Asian and minoritised young people (aged 18-28) and recent graduates living in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bath and Northeast Somerset.

Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees joined our most recent cohort of learners on one of our programme delivery days, where he spoke to learners about leadership, the Bristol One City plan and the city’s declaration of a climate and ecological emergency drawing on its intersection with racial and social justice and the need for a just and inclusive transition to a greener workforce.

‘It was fantastic to meet with young people taking part in the Green Skills for Jobs programme and discuss their concerns and ideas for responding to the climate crisis. It is particularly encouraging to see minoritised communities representing the full diversity of our city given space to engage in these issues and bring solutions to the table.

We know the impacts of the climate crisis will disproportionately impact minoritised groups, both locally and globally. We also know that there is a huge opportunity for young people to benefit from green jobs and skills, where there is growing demand and expansion. This programme highlights the need to tackle economic and climate justice together and I look forward to seeing what the group go on to do next.“

Registrations now open for Year Two of the Help to Grow: Management Programme

Posted on

After a successful first year of the Help to Grow: Management training programme, registrations are now open for Year Two at UWE Bristol.

Help to Grow: Management is a 12-week practical training programme for senior managers of small and medium enterprises that aims to help boost performance, resilience, and long-term growth of their businesses. Delivered through a blend of online and face-to-face learning, the course covers strategies for growth and innovation, leading high-performance teams, and digital adoption, as well as financial management and responsible business practices.

Learners engage in regular peer group calls, have access to 10 hours of one-to-one mentor support, hear from guest speakers and have access to join other SME leaders through both local and national alumni networks.

By the end of the programme, participants will develop a tailored business growth plan to help increase productivity and revenue and thus take their business to the next level.

Help to Grow: Management is 90% subsidised by the government and costs just £750. Designed to be undertaken alongside full-time work, the twelve modules require 50 hours of commitment to timetabled activities.

In our first year, UWE Bristol has guided over one hundred SME leaders through the programme, building on the university’s proven track record of supporting SMEs across the South-West. UWE Bristol has held the Small Business Charter since 2015 indicating a strong track record in working with, supporting and developing businesses. Those completing the programme have benefitted from the expertise of UWE module facilitators – Senior Lecturers at Bristol Business School who combine academic and real-life business experience. Additionally, learners have been supported throughout the course by a dedicated project support team enabling the smooth running of the programme and excellent pastoral care.

UWE Bristol Help to Grow: Management Alumni, Robert Ogden of Renewable Exchange commented:

“The programme gives you a very broad coverage of a lot of relevant business topics. For me personally, the mentoring sessions were a great way to take the entire course material, distil down what I found most relevant to Renewable Exchange and then turn these into actionable changes. Some of these changes can be fairly significant, for example, we’ve now opened an office in Germany which is our first international market. But, quite a lot of the changes that you might look to make are fairly small and quick improvements and just those marginable gains that improves the way the business functions and considers problems, and I found these to be really helpful for Renewable Exchange.

If you’re looking for ways to grow your business, and if you go in with the right open-minded attitude and can commit the necessary time to learning and taking action off the back of it, then you’ve got a really great chance of getting some success out of your investment into the programme, so I would definitely recommend it.”

UWE Bristol Programme Director, Dan Knox commented:

“We at Bristol Business School are rightly proud of our long-standing commitment to regional businesses and communities, and especially pleased to have supported so many businesses on the Help to Grow: Management programme.  The depth and breadth of support that this programme offers is unrivalled nationally and really gives SME leaders the time, the space and the tools to step back from day-to-day operations in order to think strategically. We look forward to welcoming many more businesses to the programme in 2022-23 and to continuing to support our alumni to find the most appropriate ways for them to continue to grow and to engage with further opportunities in the regional and national business development ecosystem.”

UWE Bristol are running courses across the South West, including Bristol, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Cornwall through the academic year 2022-23.
