A bridge, a plane, a helicopter…UWE’s Lottie has been touring for Tomorrow’s Engineers Week

This is a guest post by UWE’s Lottie dolls about the 2018 #lottietour for Tomorrow’s Engineers Week (although we think there may have been some help from Laura Maybury…)

The Women’s Engineering Society (WES) are running their third Lottie Tour in accordance with Tomorrow’s Engineers Week (5th-9th November). The tour is designed to highlight how varied and exciting a career in engineering can be and a huge number of engineering companies are supporting and taking part in #lottietour. This year is the first year that Engineering at UWE have taken part and with the help of Laura Maybury, Rachel Szadziewska and our alumni, hopefully you will see for yourself that #lottieuwe dolls are having an excellent time! Lottie has been making a diary of her travels for the Engineering Our Future Blog….

Monday 5th November

I’m a little nervous this morning, it’s the start of my big tour and I don’t actually know where I am heading! Laura says that its one of the best places in Bristol, but that we have to leave early because we’ll probably get stuck in traffic.

Well we’ve arrived (although I didn’t really appreciate being stuck in a handbag as we walked over from the car) and wow the view from up here is amazing. I’ve worked out that we are at the Clifton Suspension Bridge and I can see for miles. I went to see the bridge first to take some pictures and to learn a little about the bridge’s history. Work on the bridge began in 1754 and wasn’t completed until 1864. Unfortunately the bridge’s designer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel (IKB), would never see the completed bridge. Following an initial competition for the bridges design, and having found no one suitable, IKB at just 23 years old won the second competition. Major bridge investor Sir Abraham Elton called it ‘the ornament of Bristol and the wonder of the age’.

Next, I was told that I was allowed in the vaults; I was a bit scared as we had to go underground, but it was definitely worth the visit. To save money, time and effort, the bridge was built into the cliff face rather than any of the cliff face being removed. They were only discovered in 2002 and were designed to support the tower’s weight and transfer load from the bridge into the rock face. We couldn’t go into one of the vaults as it was full of water and I didn’t want to get wet! I’ve had such a good first day; I can’t wait to see where I am going tomorrow….

Tuesday 6th November

After yesterday I’m quite tired but I’m eager to get going as Laura has organised a trip to Aerospace Bristol….did you know they have a Concorde? Excited much!!

Concorde is HUGE!!! It’s in a hangar on its own and me and my friend (she’s also called Lottie) were able to stand underneath her wings; we looked so tiny! I learnt quite a bit about Concorde and why she means so much to people in Bristol… I think I remembered everything.

“Concorde is a symbol of the UK’s ambition, innovation, collaboration and technological achievement. Bristol can safely claim to be the true home of Concorde. The airframe and the engines were largely developed here, the UK assembly line was located here, and all UK Concordes made their maiden flight from Filton’s runway.” Concorde made her maiden flight on March 2nd 1969, but it wasn’t until October 1st of the same year that she achieved Mach 1. By November 4th 1970 she had clocked Mach 2. In 1977 she made the first of her famous flights between London and New York (previously bared from this route because of noise pollution. In 2003 she made her last flight.

I can’t write anymore today as I’m about to be ‘posted’. I don’t know what that actually means but Laura seems a bit worried that I might get lost….I’d really rather not!

Wednesday 7th November

I made it safely, now I can understand why I was wrapped up in some poppy bubbly stuff. Being posted isn’t comfortable! I am meeting Kat Jordan today, who works at a place called Renishaw.  Apparently she studied at UWE and is looking after me for the day… its nice to meet new people 🙂

I spent the day learning about Renishaw’s metrology products and how they help manufacturers to maximise their production output, significantly reduce the time taken to produce and inspect their components, and to keep their machines running reliably.

I also got to speak to Kat about her journey into engineering; I’m glad I did as it’s really interesting. “My route into engineering wasn’t the ‘norm’ (but what these days is?!) – I started my Mechanical Engineering BEng in 2012 when my son started at pre-school. I did two years full time and then the sandwich year doing an Industrial Placement at Renishaw. I was asked to stay, so then finished my final year of studies split over two years part-time whilst continuing working. I graduated in 2017 with a First Class Honours. My role is a Design Development Engineer for the Styli Division – I get involved with the development of new products, changes to existing products, and anything quality related. A good way to describe my day-to-day is that I use all the different tools and systems on my computer to carry out investigations and problem solve. And I love it :)”.

 

Thursday 8th November

I’m back with Laura again today, she seems more excited than me about this one! We are heading to RNAS Yeovilton although we don’t yet know what we are doing, we just have to ask for someone called Tracey Clempson who is going to show us around. I’ll write later when I’m back in the car!

Blimey! I am completely exhausted! RNAS Yeovilton is vast (1,400 acres to be exact) and I’m pretty sure we saw nearly all of it. I’m only 17 cm tall….so this place seems like the biggest place on Earth and there is so much going on! I visited the Wildcat Helicopter Simulator before heading over to see 825 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) and the Wildcat HMA2’s they maintain.  Then, on the way to visit 846 NAS and one of their Merlin Helicopters, I popped into the Stations Fire Department! As if that wasn’t enough, I finished my day in the Air Traffic Control Tower, visiting the controllers and the weather office! I could see the whole airfield from up there and a Wildcat was flying at the time.

Tracey told me “RNAS Yeovilton is one of the Navy’s two principal air bases, and one of the busiest military airfields in the UK. It is home to more than 100 aircraft operated on both front-line squadrons and training units, including the Wildcat Maritime Force, Commando Helicopter Force as well as the Air Engineering Training School. The Station is also home to vintage aircraft of the RN Historic Flight.”

I still have one more day to go on my official tour but I’ve had such a great time that I have already built up a list of places to visit so you will definitely be seeing more of me!

First dates announced for UWE’s new BAME girls in Engineering project

Yesterday we were delighted to announce the launch Udonna Okeke’s new UWE Bristol project, BAME girls in Engineering, and we now have the exciting news that dates for the first two school visits for the project have been set. What better way to round off Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2018 than helping to inspire the next generation?

The project offers opportunities for Black, Asian and minority ethnicity (BAME) girls, who are often under-represented in engineering, in Years 8 and 9 to visit local engineering or technology employers and to participate in mentoring meetings with professional BAME women in engineering role models.

Udonna has arranged two sessions on Wednesday 21st November for BAME girls and women in engineering to meet in group mentoring meetings.

These will take place at St Mary Redcliffe and Temple Secondary School in the morning and City Academy in the afternoon.

Engineers will be involved in workshop presentation and sharing of their individual experiences that can help motivate and inspire the students.

Udonna is currently looking for BAME women in engineering to get involved as mentors; he will organise for a taxi to pick you up from your preferred location in Bristol to take you to the City Academy or St Mary Redcliffe.

UWE engineers to take part in Leaders Award online interviews

Engineers from UWE Bristol’s Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics have been invited to take part in ‘Meet an Engineer‘ online interviews as part of Primary & Secondary Engineer Leaders Award, and Miriam Cristofoletti from the Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics at UWE Bristol is taking up the challenge on 7th December.

The Leaders Award asks children “If you were an engineer, what would you do?”. This free competition asks students to find a problem, invent a solution, draw it, explain and send it in. Pupils are encouraged to both interview engineers and watch the online interviews.

Miriam, a student engineer in the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, is looking forward to her interview and will be discussing, alongside her work, what it’s like being a student engineer. She says she’s taking part “mainly to inspire them, tell them never give up and that it’s OK not to have things working right the first time“.

Miriam has promised to update us on how it goes! Our Women Like Me engineers have also been keen to take part, and will report back too – watch this space!

BAME girls in Engineering: Opportunity to encourage diversity in engineering

A new project sponsored by UWE Bristol has kicked off to encourage, motivate and inspire more girls of Black, Asian and minority ethnicity (BAME) into the fields of Engineering and Technology, where they are often under-represented.

The project offers opportunities for BAME girls in Years 8 and 9 to visit local engineering or technology employers (with all transportation costs covered) and to partake in mentoring meetings with professional BAME women in engineering role models.

“BAME girls in Engineering” is championed by Dr Udonna Okeke, a lecturer in Engineering Design and Mathematics at UWE Bristol. “This mentorship programme will help make the girls feel less alone as they chart a career path in Engineering and Technology,” said Udonna.

Why?

The UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe and every year there is a shortfall in engineering skills.  It’s estimated that enabling more women to work in engineering and technology could add as much as £28 trillion to the annual GDP in 2025.

Of the 20.5% of women working in the engineering sector in the UK in 2017, only 8.1% were from BAME groups, implying that ethnic diversity in engineering and technology is another crucial issue to be resolved.

The BAME girls in Engineering initiative aims to promote a more diverse group of engineers and create a platform for them to be part of the innovative solutions to the engineering problems in the South West of England and the UK as a whole.

How to get involved

If you’re an engineering or technology employer in the Bristol region and want to get involved you can:

  • provide an opportunity for students to visit your engineering sites to see what it means to work on a typical engineering project
  • nominate BAME engineers within your company that can act as mentors to the girls in the project.
  • take part in UWE hosted celebration event for all those involved in the project in June 2019

Early Years Engineering with CBeebies stars Bitz & Bob!

Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2018 is taking place 5th-9th November and Early Years children can do it too – so in preparation we’ve been talking to some of the team behind Bitz & Bob, the CBeebies show with an amazing female engineer as its lead character.

Bitz is an 8 year old inventor and engineer who can fix and make anything. She and her little brother Bob solve fun engineering problems and earn rewards along the way. Bitz & Bob aims to inspire the next generation of engineers by making Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) accessible to anyone, encouraging diversity in STEM and raising aspirations for girls – an ethos that we love.

Bitz & Bob have put together some resources that they’d love you to use to encourage Early Years engineering activities during Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2018.

Practicing Resilience

Bitz & Bob shows children that STEAM exists in everything that we do. When Bitz and the gang need to solve a problem they don’t always get it right first time. They may struggle, get frustrated or even fail at times but they have the confidence to apply imaginative thinking to iterate new solutions. Our aim is for pre-school age girls and boys to engage with STEAM and get creative early on so that they become familiar with these skills.

You Can Do It Too!

We’ve created a series of do at home experiments that show children some basic principles of engineering while having loads of fun. Using only simple materials that are found in nurseries or home, with the help of an adult, children can invent a way to save the day just like Bitz!

Video 1: Static Butterflies

Make a butterfly magically flap its wings using static electricity. The balloon passes over negatively charged electrons that attracts the positively charged butterfly.

You will need; pencil, thin card, thick card, balloon, glue, pipe cleaner, googly eyes, tissue paper, scissors, paint and brush.

Video 2: Floating Balls

Learn about propulsion by making foil balls float in mid-air. Gravity will make them come down eventually but the harder you blow the higher they’ll go.

You will need; pencil, thick card, bowl, scissors, straw, foil, tape.

Video 3: Balloon Rockets

Make your balloon rocket across the room and learn about propulsion! The air inside the balloon acts like the fuel. It is stronger than the forces acting against the balloon such as air resistance and gravity.

You will need; balloons, straws, scissors, string, tape.

CBeebies Get Creative App

Finally – there is an app that is available to download for free that features great creative tasks where children can choose Bitz & Bob as a buddy to guide them through.

These new resources are a great addition to Early Years STEM and we can’t wait to try them out. They are also planning on creating more material in 2019 – watch this space!

Industry mentoring for final-year students 2018-19

Places are now available for final year female students in Engineering and related disciplines to receive mentoring from professionals in industry.

If you are planning to take up employment after you graduate, you can apply to be supported by an external mentor who will guide you in considering your options and help you make a successful transition from University to work.

There is no cost to participate in the scheme but places are limited.  To register your interest, please contact laura.foggrogers@uwe.ac.uk  by 5th November.  Successful applicants must be available to attend an induction session on Thursday 22nd November 5-7pm.

Mentoring is provided through the Women’s Engineering Society and is funded by a grant from the Arconic Foundation.

Women Like Me and Leaders Award represented at First Friday Club

On Friday 5th October 2018, UWE Bristol project Women Like Me and the Leaders Award supported by UWE Bristol were presented to leading media editors at the First Friday Club meeting in London.

Presenting to the editors’ briefing, Chris Rochester, UK Director, Primary Engineer said: “In 2017/18 academic year we continued to develop our programmes across the UK which included working with 988 schools, 3,833 teachers and 1,325 engineers. Each one getting involved and helping nearly 57,000 children to understand that engineering is a broad profession with myriad opportunities. It emphasises engineering is a diverse sector which thrives on ingenuity and creativity of the professionals working within it”.

In the South West, the Leaders Award is supported by Defence, Equipment and Support (DE&S), the MOD’s procurement organisation, along with UWE Bristol.

Air Marshal Julian Young, Chief of Materiel Air, and who is the Ministry of Defence’s Engineering Champion and lead Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Ambassador for DE&S, said: “I am delighted that the Defence Sector is rising to the challenge of increasing its diversity in our Engineering profession, whether that is cultural, gender or nationality, and we are working closely with a range of STEM-related organizations, including Primary Engineer, to help to encourage young women and girls to not only express an interest in Engineering, but to follow that through into a career and a successful one at that!”

Two female engineers from Defence, Equipment and Support also gave accounts of their personal journeys into engineering. May Holmes started her career as a primary teacher – unaware there was more than one kind of engineering aside from civil engineering – before joining DE&S as a mechanical engineer.  She said: “Not all young people are lucky enough to be introduced to and experience STEM, which can be to the detriment of younger generations reaching their full potential as well as to STEM professions – particularly with current and predicted future skills shortages in STEM roles. 

“Through programmes such as Primary Engineer, I enjoy challenging young people’s perception of what Engineering is, who an Engineer is, and encouraging all young people that it can, in fact, be for everyone.”   

UWE Bristol are supporting the South West Leaders Awards and hosting the winners’ Awards Ceremony. A team of female student engineers from the UWE Women in Science and Engineering Society will build the winning design from 2018. Alongside this, UWE Bristol is galvanising support from local industries through their Women Like Me mentoring programme, where local female engineers will work with schools over the coming year.

Dr Laura Fogg-Rogers, who is the project lead and a science communication researcher at UWE Bristol, said: “Engineers are highly creative people who can help to solve many of society’s problems. It’s a really collaborative profession, where you have to work together in teams to see your visions and designs come to fruition. The range of roles and careers is really diverse, and that’s what we’d like to emphasise to all young people, particularly girls. You can make your own mark in engineering!”

Making STEM for everyone – a new practitioner resource

Would you like to help girls engage with Physics? Or  make sure your science engagement is inclusive? May you’d just like to know how strong your unconscious bias is?

The Science Communication Unit at UWE Bristol has published a new practitioner guide which can point you to the resources to help with this, and more.

Making STEM for everyone: Resources for supporting people from under-represented groups to engage with Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering is a compilation of useful online tests, guides and materials written by Dr Laura Hobbs and Dr Laura Fogg Rogers, who also run Engineering Our Future project Women Like Me.

Drawing on a range of project outputs, industry schemes, toolkits and reports from across the STEM landscape, the guide provides a compilation of information and resources to assist anyone wishing to reach people who may face barriers to engaging with STEM subjects.

NASA astronaut Suni Williams talks to thousands of children as Leaders Awards launch

UWE Bristol is once again supporting the Primary Engineer & Secondary Engineer Leaders Awards in the South West of England.

On 20th September the Leaders Awards launched, with NASA astronaut Suni L Williams giving an online presentation for the 2018/19 competition. Primary Engineer Events Manager Jo Norwood told us: “The interview went really well. Thousands of children from across the UK watched Suni from their classrooms while she spoke about her career. Pupils were given the opportunity to ask Suni questions and here are some of the ones they asked:

What happens to water in space?

How do you go to the toilet?

If you had enough water could you make a swimming pool in space?

Does it take a lot of time to get used to being back on earth?

Has anything ever gone wrong in space?

Have you ever seen anything strange?

What happens when something breaks?

Have you ever broken anything in space?”

One Year 6 girl at Bothal Primary School asked Suni for any tips for girls who want a career in the STEM sector. Suni advised girls to take inspiration wherever they find it and to believe that they can achieve their goals – a strong message for the next generation.
