Cyberwork: cybernization and cyborgization

Posted on

On Wednesday 30th October 2013, in the Street Café at UWE (Coldharbour Lane, Frenchay Campus), Professor Barbara Czarniawska, Chair in Management Studies at GRI, School of Business, Economics and Law at University of Gothenburg will be talking…
This talk is based on a study of three news agencies (the Swedish TT, the Italian ANSA and the global Reuters) and illustrates the process and effects of increasing the demand for speed in the production of news. A related phenomenon that epitomizes problems related to speed requirement is so-called robo-trading, or algorithmic trading in finances. The speed requirement is aided by, and encourages increasing cybernization and cyborgization of news production. The same phenomena can be observed, at least to a certain degree, in many other organizations and professions in contemporary societies. The issues of acceleration and resistance, and the phenomena of cybernization and cyborgization, are of crucial importance for understanding contemporary life and work.
