My name is Paul, and I graduated from UWE Bristol in 2022 with an MSc in Financial Technology (FinTech). I initially chose this course because I wanted to deepen my understanding of the business models of FinTech banks and develop products and services tailored to the emerging interests within Ghana’s FinTech landscape.
However, the Financial Crime component of the course sparked an interest in how FinTech banks in the UK leverage technology to combat financial crime, money laundering, and fraud, and it sent my career in a different direction.
Why I chose UWE Bristol
I chose UWE Bristol for its compelling course content and practical application of technical skills. The modules focused on the evolving FinTech landscape both in the UK and globally. The emphasis on interdisciplinary teamwork and Bristol’s reputation as an emerging technological hub made UWE Bristol the ideal choice for my studies.
Overcoming Challenges
Studying overseas is a significant financial investment, especially for international students. I relied on support from family and friends and got a loan to cover my tuition fees. Despite the financial and emotional challenges, I was keen to meet new people and build relationships beyond my studies. I had previously studied in China and know how important these social interactions are for me.
During my postgraduate studies, I worked 20 hours per week to support myself. This was hard, but the experience was worth the effort, and it helped me concentrate more on my studies and develop academically.
Supported to succeed
As an international student, I used the library, careers office, and leadership training programmes a lot. The CV reviews and internship opportunities provided by the careers office were invaluable. I also attended events organised by FinTech West, which were introduced to me by my course coordinators.
Additionally, I took part in leadership training courses organised by Common Purpose, which significantly enhanced my leadership and people management skills.
“The guidance and support of my lecturers was instrumental to my success.”
Life After Graduation
I’m now working as a Financial Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Analyst at Monzo, a top FinTech bank in the UK. I investigate potential financial crime alerts, review transactions, and help prevent fraud. My role is crucial in protecting customers against fraud and ensuring the integrity of our financial systems.
Key Benefits of Studying at UWE Bristol
Studying at UWE Bristol has given me great opportunities for personal development. My understanding of how technology can be applied to diverse market opportunities in the financial sector has deepened significantly. The skills I developed while presenting in class and building connections with industry experts have also been invaluable.
“Securing employment with a FinTech bank immediately after graduating is a testament to how well the program prepared me for the job market.”
