Why I chose postgraduate study

After completing my undergraduate degree in Computer Science & Information Technology, I had a successful career in my home country of Nigeria, running a boutique management consulting firm with my husband alongside working with my entrepreneurial parents. Despite my achievements, I felt a strong pull towards furthering my education to boost my business opportunities and career prospects. The decision to return to education wasn’t easy, especially with a 3-year-old son and concerns about the cost. Initially, I considered a short course, but I realised there would never be a better time to invest in my future.

Taking that chance

Leaving a stable job to pursue full-time education was daunting. However, I was fortunate to receive a 100% scholarship from UWE Bristol, which significantly helped with my finances. Moving to a different country with my young son to return to full-time education after an 8-year gap was a significant challenge. Yet, the supportive environment at UWE Bristol made the change easier.

One of the biggest hurdles was balancing my studies with being a parent. I chose UWE Bristol because several people I know had previously studied there, and I wanted to be part of a supportive environment suitable for a young family. Both the university and the city of Bristol were great for this.

“The flexibility and support I received from UWE Bristol were crucial in helping me manage my family life alongside focussing on my studies.”

Gaining confidence and practical experience

The practical nature of the MBA programme at UWE Bristol was invaluable. I opted for a management consulting dissertation, which gave me hands-on experience working with a UK-based organisation. This helped to boost my confidence and provided a solid foundation for my career in the UK. The critical reflection module, in particular, has been key to my ongoing professional development.

“I draw back on the contents of my course in my current role as it’s still relevant in the world of work today.”

Advancing in my career and networking opportunities

Since graduating, my career has gone from strength to strength.  I have worked in various roles – including the Civil Service, the Ministry of Defence, and now Arcadis – a world-leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. The skills and knowledge gained from my postgraduate studies have been crucial in advancing my career. Networking opportunities at UWE Bristol have also been an important factor in my career growth, allowing me to connect with professionals and expand my horizons.

If you’re considering postgraduate studies, my advice is to seize the opportunity now. The future will always bring its challenges, so take advantage of the support and resources available today.

“Have conversations with the university team to explore the help you can receive. There is often more assistance available than you might realise.”

Returning to education opened doors to new opportunities, enhanced my skills, and allowed me to balance my career with being a parent. The journey was challenging, but the rewards have outweighed the challenges. If you’re contemplating postgraduate studies, go for it – you won’t regret it.
