At the CTS, I am working on a diverse set of interesting and cutting-edge research topics, such as, user experiences in automated vehicles, bus service reliability, and improving <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-business-innovation\/uwe-bristol-research-highlights-how-the-bus-is-a-lifeline-for-many-young-adults\/\">transport for young people<\/a> in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before joining UWE, I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Transport Studies, University of Leeds (2019-2020) and as a researcher at LSE Cities, London School of Economics (2015-2019). Besides that, I have worked as a professional urban planner for many years in Pakistan. I am a Transport Economist and hold a PhD in Methods and Models for Economic Decisions from University of Insubria (Italy). Also, I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA) and I am teaching in the BA Geography, MSc Engineering, and <a href=\"https:\/\/courses.uwe.ac.uk\/K46D1\/transport-engineering-and-planning\">MSc Transport Engineering and Planning<\/a> at UWE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My research interests are business aviation, air transport connectivity, sustainable aviation and air transport economics. In particular, I\u2019m exploring the role of nature, and nature connectedness, in cycling practices and experiences in the area as well as the characteristics of \u2018nature cyclists\u2019 and \u2018nature cycling\u2019 journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m interested in urban and rural active mobilities, nature connectedness and planetary wellbeing and mobility justice perspectives. In April 2023, I was offered a new role as research associate in electric automated mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though I have a Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Economics from the University of the Basque Country, my main research focus so far has been on cities. Before joining UWE, I worked as an associate professor of urban planning at Istanbul Technical University, where I also founded <a href=\"https:\/\/eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fistanbulon.itu.edu.tr%2Fen%2Fhomepage&amp;data=05%7C01%7CMel.Cairns%40uwe.ac.uk%7C64fb33e97716409dabe208db91a26c72%7C07ef1208413c4b5e9cdd64ef305754f0%7C0%7C0%7C638263899003474874%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=OiKweTVJ7ZLPhETVWCj4F39mahCodmVVzRd46IwPaoo%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IstanbulON<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/istanbulon.itu.edu.tr\/en\/istanbulon\">Urban Mobility Lab<\/a>. I also spent most of 2022 at the University of Manchester working on the mobility practices of domestic workers as a USF international fellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have a PhD in transport geography from the School of Geography and the Environment at Oxford University. My master\u2019s research assessed electric vehicles&#8217; impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. My research to date has focused on active travel to school, School Street closures, and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods \u2013 examining the policy processes and mobility impacts of the rapid introduction of these schemes during Covid-19. I\u2019m looking forward to continuing with some of these strands at CTS, particularly while working on the EPSRC-funded OptiWaSP project which focuses on the potential for implementing walking school busses.
