Led by the SCU&#8217;s Laura Fogg Rogers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/uwe-bristol-supports-engineer-leaders-award-for-south-west-england\/\">UWE Bristol is an official sponsor<\/a>, in partnership with Defence Equipment and Support (the procurement arm of the Ministry of Defence).<\/p>\n<p>The shortlisted entries were showcased at a public\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/south-west-engineering-leaders-awards-exhibition-and-public-event\/\">exhibition<\/a>\u00a0in June 2018, bringing together 19 winners and their parents in a celebration with engineers from across the South West.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;If you were an engineer, what would you do?&quot;\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ry06M1uxruY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Children from Reception through to Year 10 were recognised for their efforts. Designs ranged from rotating bunk beds to bird-identifier binoculars. Students from UWE Bristol\u2019s EngWest Studio will make one of the winning entries as part of their studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoListParagraph\">The future of engineering is here!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h2 class=\"entry-title\">Ready to engineer your future?<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"post-thumbnail\">Following International Women in Engineering Day on 23<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0June, 135 female students in Years 9-11 from across the South West had the chance to participate in hands-on activities, demonstrating the ways in which engineering careers impact many aspects of society.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1517 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/science-communication\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/07\/Girls-event-1-300x180.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/science-communication\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/07\/Girls-event-1-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/science-communication\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/07\/Girls-event-1-768x460.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/science-communication\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/07\/Girls-event-1.png 899w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>Each zone focused on a different contribution to society, with the ultimate challenge of designing and building a city of the future. The girls got involved in bridge building, urban design, smart technologies, and sustainable solutions. All these\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www1.uwe.ac.uk\/study\/courses\/coursesbysubject\/engineering.aspx\">courses<\/a>\u00a0are taught in the Faculty of Environment and Technology at UWE Bristol.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UWE Bristol event inspires next generation of women in engineering\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kdnpoK05ZiQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The event aimed to challenge traditional perceptions that engineering is mainly for men, in order to tackle a lack of diversity in the profession.
