UWE staff, families, and friends are warmly invited to join us at Millennium Square, Bristol City Centre, on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June, where our researchers will be showcasing an inspiring range of activities in the UWE tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What UWE Researchers Are Bringing to the Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s programme features a rich mix of hands\u2011on workshops and interactive demonstrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/Person\/Clair2Schwarz\"><strong>Clair Schwarz<\/strong> <\/a>(CATE) will introduce visitors to the ecological and cultural significance of the wren, offering the chance to create clay wrens and paper masks while exploring themes of storytelling, identity, and tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"903\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-external-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/06\/image-1.png\" alt=\"A bio screen print of a wren\" class=\"wp-image-8851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-external-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/06\/image-1.png 903w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-external-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/06\/image-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-external-engagement\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/06\/image-1-768x577.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/Person\/Laura9Morgan\"><strong>Dr Laura Morgan<\/strong> <\/a>(CATE) and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/Person\/LauraClarkeOaten\">Laura Clarke<\/a> <\/strong>(CATE) will run a bio screen\u2011printing workshop using colour derived from native UK trees, helping visitors understand where textile colour comes from, why it matters, and how material choices can support more sustainable futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nature\u2011inspired innovation will also be on display as <a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/person\/lidiabadarnah\"><strong>Lidia Badarnah<\/strong> <\/a>(CATE) and <a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/person\/sigitazigure\"><strong>Dr Sigita Zigure<\/strong> <\/a>(CATE) demonstrate how biomimicry, bio\u2011design, and nature\u2011based solutions can help create greener, cooler, and more resilient places. Their activity invites visitors to take part in creative challenges that show how nature can guide imaginative problem\u2011solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/Person\/Verity6Jones\">Verity Jones<\/a><\/strong> (CHSS) will share <em>Taking a Close Look at Microfibres<\/em>, an activity linking UWE research on air quality with the Schools Under the Microscope project, offering a creative way to explore microfibres, clothing, and indoor air quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/person\/kishwarali\"><strong>Kishwar Ali<\/strong> (<\/a>CHSS) will showcase research on how plants respond to climate change, how biodiversity supports resilient ecosystems, and how we can design greener, climate\u2011smart cities and landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families can also meet the <em>Oak Tree Doctors<\/em>, presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/person\/carriebrady\"><strong>Carrie Brady<\/strong> <\/a>(CHSS) and her research group. The project brings together expertise from urban planning, landscape architecture, public health, environmental science, and air quality research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/person\/oluwadamilolaokeyoyin\">Oluwadamilola Okeyoyin<\/a> <\/strong>(CHSS) will offer <strong>Plants and You<\/strong>, an interactive activity inviting visitors to touch, smell, and investigate herbs and plant materials while discovering how plants, microbes, and everyday health are interconnected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/Person\/Emma12Thomas\">Emma Thomas<\/a><\/strong> (CHSS) will present <strong>The Rights of Rivers<\/strong> an activity grounded in interdisciplinary research that treats rivers as teachers, collaborators, and agents within environmental futures.
