{"id":3802,"date":"2022-09-06T15:47:51","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T14:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-business-innovation\/?p=3802"},"modified":"2022-09-06T15:47:54","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T14:47:54","slug":"inaugural-this-is-essential-work-exhibition-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-external-engagement\/inaugural-this-is-essential-work-exhibition-launched\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural \u201cThis is Essential Work\u201d exhibition launched"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>P<\/strong>i<strong>cture by Aline Brune, one of the profiled artists from the exhibition. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cThis is Essential Work\u201d project is an online open-access intersectional feminist exhibition initiated by academic mothers and creators, Michal Nahman (UWE Bristol) and Susan Newman (Open University) in response to their experiences and interdisciplinary research on the commodification of breastmilk and forms of exploitation of women\u2019s bodies and labour. The project received over 700 submissions and the online exhibition was recently launched<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition saw work submitted from several countries including the UK, Brazil, Germany, the USA, China, Nigeria, India and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibition emerged from research funded by a UWE Vice Chancellor\u2019s Award for Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research conducted just before the Covid-19 pandemic, in Bengaluru, India, into mother\u2019s provision of \u201cexcess\u201d breastmilk to a private company that was processing it and selling it at a profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The volume of work was both moving and invigorating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The judging team commented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFor this exhibition, the art conveys how work and bodies get devalued. This feminist exhibition is about showcasing this gendered work: to acknowledge, to grieve, and importantly, to connect with one another.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We are showcasing mother\/artists who question the value that society puts on their work, including all kinds of labour.
