{"id":1455,"date":"2020-05-29T10:02:50","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T09:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-business-innovation\/?p=1455"},"modified":"2025-05-19T09:46:20","modified_gmt":"2025-05-19T08:46:20","slug":"success-for-virtual-cpd-course-on-an-introduction-to-zero-carbon-buildings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/research-external-engagement\/success-for-virtual-cpd-course-on-an-introduction-to-zero-carbon-buildings\/","title":{"rendered":"Success for virtual CPD course on an Introduction to Zero Carbon Buildings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Architecture and the Built Environment within FET at UWE Bristol have seen great success in a recently launched CPD course on an \u201c<strong>Introduction to Zero Carbon Buildings<\/strong>\u201d designed and delivered by Patrick O\u2019Flynn (BEng, MSc, FHEA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking to continue to grow their established presence in\nthis remit with the new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), the course had over\n750 applicants for the first iteration and drew a wide audience from the UK and\ninternationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Course Leader Patrick O\u2019Flynn said <em>\u201cIn\ntimes of such change,&nbsp;we wanted to ensure as a department we could support\nour industry to transition to a future that embraces Zero Carbon building\ndesign. Through offering this MOOC, it allowed both established and early\ncareer professionals an opportunity to develop their knowledge and engage with\nus as a department.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attendees came from across the construction industry\nincluding Architects, Building Services Engineers, Civil and Structural\nEngineers, Surveyors and well as those in other roles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delivered virtually, the course gave an introduction to a\nnumber of zero carbon factors including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Building physics;<\/li><li>Renewable Energy &amp; Green Technology; <\/li><li>Energy simulation<\/li><li>Human factors. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course worked its way through the topic using weekly\nonline session, preparation reading and follow up exercises to embed knowledge.\nThe course worked its way through the topic using weekly online session,\npreparation reading and follow up exercises to embed knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delegates could catch up in an online caf\u00e9 space to discuss\nthe topics covered further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This course provided an opportunity as a taster session in a\nrange of topics which UWE provides further opportunities to study at a deeper\ndepth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next run for this course is confirmed for 12 June.
