UWE Bristol selected to deliver Small Business Leadership Programme – spaces available!

UWE Bristol have been selected to deliver the Small Business Leadership Programme with the first cohort starting in January. Spaces are available but limited, so book now to avoid disappointment.

The Small Business Leadership Programme supports senior leaders to enhance their business’s resilience and recovery from the impact of COVID-19. It helps small and medium-sized businesses to develop their potential for future growth and productivity.

The fully-funded 10 week programme will be delivered online by small business and enterprise experts from world-leading business schools.

Participants will develop strategic leadership skills and the confidence to make informed decisions to boost business performance.

To join the Small Business Leadership Programme, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Your business must be a Small or Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) based in England
  • Your business needs to employ between 5 and 249 people and have been operational for at least one year
  • The participant should be a decision maker or member of the senior management team within the business with at least one person reporting directly to them
  • The participant must be able to commit to attending the full programme
  • A maximum of 2 individuals form any one organisation may attend

Our four cohorts will start on the following dates, with the full dates available on the registration page:

Cohort 1 – start date Monday 11 January 2021, 13.00 – 14.30
Cohort 2 – start date Tuesday 12 January 2021, 15.00 – 16.30
Cohort 3 – start date Monday 18 January 2021, 17.30 – 19.00
Cohort 4 – start date Tuesday 19 January 2021, 09.30 – 11.00

Small Business Minister Paul Scully said: “The strength of small businesses up and down the country will be vital as we begin to bounce back from coronavirus and re-build our economy. The Small Business Leadership Programme will help to equip small business leaders with the leadership and problem-solving skills they need to grow their firms in the wake of this pandemic.”

Success for virtual CPD course on an Introduction to Zero Carbon Buildings

The Department of Architecture and the Built Environment within FET at UWE Bristol have seen great success in a recently launched CPD course on an “Introduction to Zero Carbon Buildings” designed and delivered by Patrick O’Flynn (BEng, MSc, FHEA).

Looking to continue to grow their established presence in this remit with the new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), the course had over 750 applicants for the first iteration and drew a wide audience from the UK and internationally.

 Course Leader Patrick O’Flynn said “In times of such change, we wanted to ensure as a department we could support our industry to transition to a future that embraces Zero Carbon building design. Through offering this MOOC, it allowed both established and early career professionals an opportunity to develop their knowledge and engage with us as a department.”

Attendees came from across the construction industry including Architects, Building Services Engineers, Civil and Structural Engineers, Surveyors and well as those in other roles.

Delivered virtually, the course gave an introduction to a number of zero carbon factors including:

  • Building physics;
  • Renewable Energy & Green Technology;
  • Energy simulation
  • Human factors.

The course worked its way through the topic using weekly online session, preparation reading and follow up exercises to embed knowledge. The course worked its way through the topic using weekly online session, preparation reading and follow up exercises to embed knowledge.

Delegates could catch up in an online café space to discuss the topics covered further.

This course provided an opportunity as a taster session in a range of topics which UWE provides further opportunities to study at a deeper depth.

UWE Bristol Professional Development Awards (PDA) offers you the opportunity to build your own degree using previous qualifications and experience, as well as new learning. With a focus on work-based learning, the flexible structure allows you to tailor your course to match your professional development.

About the awards

The Professional Development Awards are based on credit accumulation and transfer. You can build credit through a UWE Bristol Work-based Learning module, accredited learning and taught modules to gain a UWE Bristol qualification with the title of Professional Development Awards.

Previous learning and credits gained from other academic institutions that have already been awarded (if they can be mapped against the programme learning outcomes) can also be used within the award. You can also import UWE Bristol credit to count towards your target award.

The PDA is flexible, self-directed learning through which you can negotiate your own programme of study, according to your individual learning requirements and professional goals. Our learners come from different professional backgrounds, with a majority of them in particular from the health and social care fields.

The Professional Development Awards programme enables you to create a bespoke course where you can build credit to gain an award from a 60-credit certificate (both undergraduate and postgraduate), Certificate of Higher Education, Foundation Degree and other undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications.
