{"id":6176,"date":"2021-10-21T14:46:44","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T13:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/?p=6176"},"modified":"2021-10-21T14:46:47","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T13:46:47","slug":"is-green-flight-possible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/is-green-flight-possible\/","title":{"rendered":"Is green flight possible?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/people.uwe.ac.uk\/Person\/SteveWright\">Steve Wright<\/a>, Senior Research Fellow in Aerospace Engineering at UWE Bristol, shared his thoughts on the electrification of flight, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evsummit.biz\/\">EV Summit<\/a> Online Series &#8220;How do we deliver a decarbonised international aerospace sector?&#8221; held on 14th October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the live stream, Steve flew one of his drones to demonstrate one of the core advantages in electric aviation &#8211; &#8220;It gives flexibility &#8211; you can sprinkle propulsion systems all over the aircraft, arranging them in ways you just couldn\u2019t imagine in conventional aerospace.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steve explained that this flexibility was enabling a relatively quick roll out of electric and alternative propulsion systems in smaller aircraft and the creation of new classes of &#8220;flying taxis&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Steve expressed doubts about how quick it would be to scale up the electric propulsion systems, alongside their unique supporting technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not expecting a transatlantic passenger plane until 2050. I hope I\u2019m wrong,&#8221; said Steve. &#8220;We&#8217;re not going to beat this problem in one sitting.
