{"id":6106,"date":"2021-10-27T10:52:18","date_gmt":"2021-10-27T09:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/?p=6106"},"modified":"2021-10-27T10:52:21","modified_gmt":"2021-10-27T09:52:21","slug":"youth-discuss-traffic-reduction-for-net-zero-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/youth-discuss-traffic-reduction-for-net-zero-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth discuss traffic reduction for Net Zero 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>During the three day Youth Engineering for Environmental Sustainability Summit (YEESS), 11-13 October 2021, young people across the West of England discussed carbon-emission cutting solutions with experts, before quizzing local politicians on their Climate Action strategies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>There was lots of great discussion worth noting, so we&#8217;re reporting each day&#8217;s targets, questions and potential solutions in a three-part series.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-size: revert\">D<\/span>ay 1 &#8211; <span style=\"font-size: revert\">How might we take 40% of traffic off our roads by 2030<\/span>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traffic reduction is a core target mapped into the Bristol and West of England Climate Action Plans, and after exploring the topic, KS4 &amp; KS5 pupils posed questions for Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.gov.uk\/documents\/2%200182\/33379\/Mayor%27s+Climate+Emergen%20cy+Action+Plan+2019+FINAL\">strategy<\/a> for achieving traffic reduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Why<\/span> do we need to slim down road traffic?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yeess.imanengineer.org.uk\/profile\/stevemelia\/\">Dr Steve Melia, Senior Lecturer in Transport and Planning, UWE Bristol<\/a> introduced the issue, explaining the patterns of increased traffic in the UK and introducing a few traffic reduction methods used across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTransport accounts for 27% of the UK\u2019s carbon emissions, but is our fastest growing sector,&#8221; said Melia. He concluded that electrification wouldn&#8217;t be enough to reach carbon cutting targets and therefore traffic volume cutting methods will be required. See his video introduction below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How can we reduce traffic by 40% and reach net-zero? - Steve Melia - UWE\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P2S7FY4M-84?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">How<\/span> to reduce traffic by 40%<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YEESS delegates watched video postcards from engineers leading the way in traffic reduction, and then discussed the various ideas presented, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2DQSJ5JXrls&amp;list=PL9z52T1dzQlag8RvKkAMhSX0HS30w7GwN&amp;index=2\">Ideas for electric cars<\/a>\u2019 by Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yeess.imanengineer.org.uk\/profile\/tonypipe\/\">Tony Pipe<\/a>&nbsp;from UWE<\/li><li>\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3qT24eiQn28&amp;list=PL9z52T1dzQlag8RvKkAMhSX0HS30w7GwN&amp;index=8\">15 minute cities<\/a>\u2019 by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yeess.imanengineer.org.uk\/profile\/lucycorfield\/\">Lucy Corfield<\/a>, Atkins<\/li><li>\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Or-gU7jP2j8&amp;list=PL9z52T1dzQlag8RvKkAMhSX0HS30w7GwN&amp;index=4\">Integrated public transport<\/a>\u2019 by Emilia Melville from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.movingbristolforward.co.uk\/tram-study\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moving Bristol Forward<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the online chat, YEESS delegate Izaac O asked &#8220;Why will electrification on it\u2019s own not be enough?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was answered by Fidel Olaye, Electronic Engineer at Babcock, &#8220;There&#8217;ll still be loads of traffic on the road and the generation of electric power used by electric cars isn&#8217;t great because pollutants are still produced.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discussion was dominated by questions over  commuting times, electric cars and resistance to change; with young people steering towards trams in the city centre, but unconvinced by the idea of 15 minute cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our city&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Climate Action strategy<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/10\/Interview-shot-Marvin-11.10.21-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6213\" width=\"626\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/10\/Interview-shot-Marvin-11.10.21-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/10\/Interview-shot-Marvin-11.10.21-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/10\/Interview-shot-Marvin-11.10.21-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/10\/Interview-shot-Marvin-11.10.21-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/10\/Interview-shot-Marvin-11.10.21-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/10\/Interview-shot-Marvin-11.10.21.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>Live stream of Roy Kareem interviewing Marvin Rees on Monday 11th Oct<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roy Kareem, Director of Bright Green Future, interviewed Bristol City Mayor Marvin Rees, who quickly picked up on the importance of engineers in managing the Climate Action response. &#8220;Fundamentally what  we need to do is change the very systems that underpin city life &#8211; transport systems, energy systems, water systems, energy systems, housing systems; so we have the ability, and actually have no choice, other than to lead a low impact life,&#8221; said Rees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of transport, Rees outlined his vision &#8211; &#8220;The end goal is to have an underground over-ground for the city. An underground in the middle and an over-ground for the outside, that&#8217;s predictable, that&#8217;s fast, that&#8217;s decarbonised and that&#8217;s used by hundreds of thousands of people every day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rees pointed out the need for long term financial support needed to support the infrastructure changes needed.
