These are a useful resource for anyone wanting to encourage girls to think about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects as relevant to them, including the engineers taking part in our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/women-like-me-launch-event-becoming-a-leader-in-engineering\/\">Women Like Me<\/a> programme for supporting women and girls in engineering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Still too low<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u201cThe overall proportion of girls taking physics A-level has remained stubbornly close to 20% for the last three decades.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><em>&#8220;Girls perform just as well as boys in physics at GCSE. However, in\u00a02016, only 1.9% of girls chose A-level physics, compared to 6.5% of boys. This represents 5,669 girls compared to 21,032 boys.&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iop.org\/publications\/iop\/2018\/file_71495.pdf\">Why Not Physics<\/a>?<\/strong>\u00a0Report from\u00a0IOP, 2018\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">\u00a0Statistics and the arguments are laid out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ase.org.uk\/resources\/education-in-science\/issue-273\/news-events-and-resources\">September issue<\/a> of ASE&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ase.org.uk\/resources\/education-in-science\"><em>Education in Science<\/em><\/a>, in an article on the Institute of Physics&#8217; work in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\"><strong>Could your school make a difference for girls in STEM?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-education\">Department for Education<\/a> (DfE) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/behavioural-insights-team\">Behavioural Insights Team<\/a>\u00a0(BIT) are looking for state-funded secondary schools to test interventions to get more girls to take STEM A-levels. The pilot is promised not to be burdensome and participating schools can access free resources, targeted interventions and a bespoke report on how they can inspire girls.
