{"id":4939,"date":"2021-06-02T10:37:13","date_gmt":"2021-06-02T09:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/?p=4939"},"modified":"2021-06-02T10:37:15","modified_gmt":"2021-06-02T09:37:15","slug":"school-of-engineering-building-awarded-excellent-breeam-rating-for-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/school-of-engineering-building-awarded-excellent-breeam-rating-for-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Engineering building awarded &#8220;Excellent&#8221; BREEAM rating for sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This news piece was written by Pilar Garcia from the UWE Bristol Estates and Facilities team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UWE Bristol&#8217;s new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwe.ac.uk\/life\/campus-and-facilities\/engineering-building\">School of Engineering building<\/a>\u00a0on Frenchay campus has achieved an &#8220;Excellent&#8221; rating for its green credentials\u00a0from the international scheme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeam.com\/\">BREEAM<\/a> (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method).<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BREEAM is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings in the UK. Our rating demonstrates that the building is in the top 10% of UK new non-domestic buildings for sustainability best practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our assessor Hydrock Consultants Ltd carried out a comprehensive assessment of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Management<\/li><li>Health and Wellbeing<\/li><li>Energy<\/li><li>Transport<\/li><li>Water<\/li><li>Materials<\/li><li>Waste<\/li><li>Land Use and Ecology<\/li><li>Pollution<\/li><li>Innovation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples of the sustainability best practice employed in the building include having lots of natural ventilation, installing PV (solar) panels, connection to UWE Bristol&#8217;s district heating network, use of underfloor heating and use of materials with high thermal mass (the ability of a material to absorb and store heat energy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/intranet.uwe.ac.uk\/sites\/Assets\/Images1\/School%20of%20Engineering%20interior%20630.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tod Burton, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Technology, said: &#8220;Engineering is about problem-solving and the climate emergency is arguably our greatest challenge of all. &nbsp;It is important that the building used by our student engineers as they develop their problem-solving skills has now been recognised by BREEAM as &#8220;Excellent&#8221; for its sustainability performance \u2013 a great achievement and credit to everyone associated with the project&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project was also rated 100% for &#8220;Management&#8221;. Strong collaboration enabled sustainability to be embedded from the early stages of the project and ultimately led to the success of the scheme.
