{"id":2242,"date":"2020-11-05T14:38:47","date_gmt":"2020-11-05T14:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/?p=2242"},"modified":"2020-11-24T17:54:43","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T17:54:43","slug":"edm-signs-up-to-the-tomorrows-engineers-code","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/edm-signs-up-to-the-tomorrows-engineers-code\/","title":{"rendered":"EDM signs up to the Tomorrow&#8217;s Engineers Code"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Engineering Design and Mathematics (EDM) department at UWE Bristol have been taking part in <strong><em>Tomorrow&#8217;s Engineers Week<\/em><\/strong>, an annual campaign that highlights to young people that engineering is a creative, problem solving, exciting career that improves the world around us.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Throughout the week engineering institutions, employers and schools come together to show young people the vital importance of engineering careers and to provide information about how to become an engineer in the future. To achieve these goals, Signatories make four pledges about their approach to funding, designing, delivering, and learning from engineering-inspiration activities (including STEM programmes dedicated to inspiring young people into engineering).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Signatories form the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/code.tomorrowsengineers.org.uk\/signatory\/\">Code Community<\/a>&nbsp;who together, will <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Share and build an understanding of what works<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Improve the quality, inclusivity, targeting and reach of activities designed to inspire young people<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Deliver a joined-up approach to drive change at scale<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Tomorrow&#039;s Engineers Code introduction\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XbhR9uzAvzA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pledges:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inspiring Connection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving Inclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Showcasing Engineering<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improving Impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The EDM department is extremely well placed to deliver on these pledges, with several well established programmes that aim to increase diversity within engineering already running, including mentoring programmes such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/the-successes-of-women-like-me-2018-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women Like Me<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/bame-girls-in-engineering-great-success-at-bristol-brunel-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BAME Girls into Engineering<\/a>. EDM also supports primary (<a href=\"https:\/\/curiositybristol.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Curiosity Connections<\/a>) and secondary (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurequest.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Future Quest<\/a>) engagement providers, and the department&#8217;s new <strong><em>DETI Inspire<\/em><\/strong> team are currently developing a new targeted approach to develop and deliver engineering outreach to under-represented groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>As a core provider of public engagement in the region and champion of equality, diversity and inclusion, the EDM department is confident in its ability to fulfil these pledges. We are very pleased to be joining the Code Community, and look forward to working together to inspire a diverse engineering workforce for the future.<\/p><cite>Lisa Brodie, Head of Department: Engineering Design and Mathematics<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/uwe-leads-on-inspiring-future-digital-engineers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DETI Inspire<\/a><\/em><\/strong> will map past engagement activities\u00a0in the region, identifying any gaps in current outreach provision, enabling the prioritisation of outreach to those that do not currently interact with engineering-inspiration activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">With expert advice and guidance from collaborations with organisations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/edm-department-partners-with-the-association-for-black-and-minority-ethnic-engineers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AFBE-UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/wise-launches-new-digital-platform-for-11-19-year-old-girls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WISE<\/a>, the team are developing curriculum linked engagement activities, designed to help target and understand potential participants from under-represented groups.&nbsp;Activities will be available for use both digitally during the current pandemic, and when physical activity can resume, they will tour schools and run out of the new Prototype and Play centre at UWE Bristol\u2019s Engineering Building.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">In order to showcase relatable role models from all backgrounds in these activities, the team are building a&nbsp;<em><strong>Diversity Demonstrator<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em>network &#8211; a community of diverse engineering role models, from groups currently under-represented in engineering, who will deliver engineering public engagement throughout the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The team are currently working with STEM Ambassadors West of England, Future Quest and the WECA Careers Hub to develop a monitoring and evaluation toolkit, to assess the impact of their activities, and will share these insights with their partners, stakeholders and the Code Community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">For more information about the EDM department and its outreach programmes, please contact the team at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"mailto:engineeringourfuture@uwe.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\">engineeringourfuture@uwe.ac.uk <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Co-created by and for the engineering community, The Code is \u2018owned\u2019 by its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/code.tomorrowsengineers.org.uk\/signatory\/\">community of Signatories and Supporters<\/a>.<\/em> <em>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/code.tomorrowsengineers.org.uk\/team\/\">Advisory Board<\/a>\u00a0and informal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/code.tomorrowsengineers.org.uk\/team\/\">Thinking Group<\/a>\u00a0support EngineeringUK, which has been chosen to manage and deliver The Code and its community.
