{"id":2136,"date":"2020-09-30T15:36:42","date_gmt":"2020-09-30T14:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/?p=2136"},"modified":"2020-09-30T15:36:47","modified_gmt":"2020-09-30T14:36:47","slug":"future-quest-launch-iamfirstgen-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/future-quest-launch-iamfirstgen-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Future Quest launch #IAmFirstGen campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Were you the first in your family to go to university?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If so, Future Quest would like you to share your story as part of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurequest.org.uk\/outreach-hub\/i-am-first-gen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#IAmFirstGen<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is #IAmFirstGen?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The #IAmFirstGen campaign aims to highlight that anyone can study at university, regardless of their background, and that there are lots of different journeys into higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One barrier to young people attending university is often that they don\u2019t see themselves as belonging at a university, as they think that there is nobody like them studying at degree level. The campaign plans to dispel this myth by showcasing different stories from graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To do this, #IAmFirstGen will bring together\u202fcompanies, organisations, and individuals\u202facross the\u202fSouth\u202fWest\u202fto form\u202fa community of students and graduates\u202fthat\u202fare the first\u202fin\u202ftheir family to study at degree level. This pool of \u2018first in family\u2019 ambassadors will\u202fhighlight\u202fthe\u202fdiversity of educational journeys and career pathways\u202fthat people in various sectors have\u202ffollowed and support the progression of\u202fyoung people who possess skills and talent, but\u202fwho do not have\u202fthe networks\u202for\u202fconnections in their chosen sector.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By telling personal stories, the transformative power of higher education experiences can be shared with young people from first generation backgrounds to help build their expectations and create their own narrative for the future.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can take part?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There a few different ways to get involved, whether you are an individual, small social enterprise or large business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Individuals:<\/strong> Become a First Gen Ambassador.\u00a0Commit to sharing personal stories of your journey to and through higher education and onto your current employment, and support First Gen learners to build their own stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First Gen Employers:\u00a0<\/strong>Commit to targeted outreach and graduate recruitment activities to further the opportunities for First Gen learners, with support from UWE Bristol and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurequest.org.uk\/outreach-hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Future Quest Outreach Hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do you need to do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First Gen Ambassadors<\/strong>:\u202f If you are a first generation graduate, share your experiences by writing a Letter To Previous Self. You can find downloadable guidance and examples of letters <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futurequest.org.uk\/letters\/submit\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First Gen Employers<\/strong>:\u202f Show your support by sharing news of the campaign with your colleagues and networks and help to reach people that may be able to contribute a letter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We know that organisations are increasingly recognising the value of diversity and want to support the social mobility agenda. More than 500 organisations, including UWE Bristol, have signed the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.socialmobilitypledge.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Social Mobility Pledge,<\/a>\u00a0committing to closing opportunity gaps and working together to address inequalities.
