{"id":1874,"date":"2020-05-06T11:15:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T10:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/?p=1874"},"modified":"2020-04-30T14:54:05","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T13:54:05","slug":"help-children-grasp-what-engineering-is-all-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/engineering\/help-children-grasp-what-engineering-is-all-about\/","title":{"rendered":"Help children grasp what engineering is all about"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With schools closed, scientists have moved online to engage with children on all the wonderfully intricate and mind-boggling secrets of our universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily a great locally run platform for sharing science with kids already exists &#8211; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/imascientist.org.uk\/\">I&#8217;m a Scientist<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you can join other UWE engineers in the <em>I&#8217;m an Engineer<\/em> zone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I&#8217;m a Scientist<\/em> organises set weeks of interactions throughout the year, each on specific themes of inquiry. I got to pontificate on <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/do-you-think-that-there-is-life-on-mars-or-on-any-other-planets\">life on Mars<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/what-do-you-think-about-the-end-of-the-world-theory\">the end of the world<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/will-humans-ever-become-extinct\">human extinction<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/have-you-got-any-idea-in-how-we-are-going-to-stop-global-warming\">global warming<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/is-nuclear-power-a-good-thing\">nuclear power<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/why-do-we-have-dreams\">dreams<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/how-do-we-measure-light-years-i-know-its-how-far-away-it-takes-light-to-travel-but-how-is-it-measured-and-could-you\">light years<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/what-your-favourite-animal\">my favourite animal<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/what-is-your-favourite-car-manufacturer\">my favourite car<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/what-is-your-opinion-on-string-theory\">string theory<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/why-are-we-looking-for-the-higgs-boson-particle-and-what-will-happen-if-we-discover-it\">the Higgs Boson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/what-is-your-opinion-on-dark-matter-what-do-you-think-it-is\">dark matter<\/a>.<br> <br>&#8220;By far the biggest category of questions was about doing science: <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/when-did-you-decide-to-become-a-scientist-and-why-2\">why<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/how-serious-are-you-about-science\">and<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/is-it-difficult-doing-the-work-that-you-do\">how<\/a> you do science, what&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/whats-youre-favourite-thing-about-your-research\">best thing<\/a> about being a scientist, <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/what-is-your-greatest-discovery\">what you think you have achieved<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/do-you-think-your-work-will-change-the-world-or-will-it-only-affect-a-few-people\">will achieve<\/a> and so on (and quite a few on what you will do with the prize money if you win). These are great questions because they allow you to explode some myths about science: for instance that you <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/do-you-see-yourself-as-scientifimacally-smart-like-a-high-level-of-smartitude\">have to be super smart to do science<\/a>, or that <a href=\"http:\/\/chlorinem11.imascientist.org.uk\/2011\/03\/will-youre-research-help-us-in-any-way\">one scientist can change the world on their own<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Alan Winfield<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With schools closed, scientists have moved online to engage with children on all the wonderfully intricate and mind-boggling secrets of our universe.
