UWE Bristol are supporting Show of Strength<\/a>‘s production ‘Sarah Guppy: The Bridge, The Bed, The Truth’, all about the pioneering, but overlooked, female engineer. For International Women’s Day 2019<\/a>, free 10 minute performances will be given at the City Hall in Bristol on Saturday 2nd<\/sup> May – see below and the Show of Strength website<\/a> for further information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah Guppy \u2014 the first woman to patent a bridge and the first to formally design one.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engineer, inventor, campaigner, designer, reformer, writer, environmentalist and business woman \u2013 to name but eight. Born in Birmingham in 1770 \u2013 as the Industrial Revolution revved its engine \u2013 she moved to Bristol to marry merchant Samuel Guppy. Her other patents include a breakfast machine and an exercise bed. She had six children and married her second husband at the age of 66 \u2013 he was 31. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also mentored young IK Brunel with his \u2013 winning \u2013 entry for that Clifton Bridge Competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well known Bristol actor Kim Hicks<\/em> plays Sarah, Director Sue Colverd<\/em> directed Show of Strength\u2019s acclaimed Fanny and Johnnie Cradock Cook The Great American Songbook<\/em>, and the script is by Creative Producer Sheila Hannon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
