{"id":1403,"date":"2025-09-24T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/education\/?p=1403"},"modified":"2025-09-23T20:38:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T19:38:07","slug":"childrens-literature-anti-racism-and-educational-impact-difference-in-primary-schools-resource","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uwe.ac.uk\/education\/childrens-literature-anti-racism-and-educational-impact-difference-in-primary-schools-resource\/","title":{"rendered":"Children&#8217;s literature, anti-racism, and educational impact: &#8216;Difference in Primary Schools&#8217; resource"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Dr Verity Jones, Associate Professor in Education<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 23 September 2025, Lambeth Palace hosted the launch of the <em>Difference in Primary Schools<\/em>\u00a0resource\u2014an ambitious and timely initiative that uses children\u2019s film, songs and literature to support meaningful conversations about race, identity, and belonging in primary education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed by the Difference programme, the resource is freely available to schools and educators across the UK, offering a suite of lessons that foreground empathy, critical thinking, and inclusive practice from early years through to transition into Key Stage 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the team leader for the RESPECT project, I was particularly proud that the transition lesson draws directly on <em>If Racism Vanished for a Day<\/em> &#8211; a book developed through our project. Co-created with children from Bristol schools, the text and illustrations invite readers to imagine a world without racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-issuu wp-block-embed-issuu\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"If Racism Vanished for a Day\" src=\"https:\/\/e.issuu.com\/embed.html?u=uwebristol&#038;d=if_racism_vanished_for_a_day\" style=\"border:none; width: 840px; height: 644px;\" allow=\"clipboard-write,allow-top-navigation,allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation,allow-downloads,allow-scripts,allow-same-origin,allow-popups,allow-modals,allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox,allow-forms\"  allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The integration of our book demonstrates how academic research can shape real-world practice, particularly in the context of anti-racism education.
