The Bristol Business Engagement Centre (BBEC) in conjunction with Bristol Business School is proud to launch our Future Impact Webinar Series. This webinar series will feature exciting new developments in technology, science and management practice and highlight their impact on the future of business and society. Thought provoking yet practical, you will develop a better appreciation of what these advances will mean for you, your business and community.

Our inaugural webinar, presented by Dr. Noordin Shehabuddeen, with panellists from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) will focus on social media and body image. The Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) is the world’s largest research group focusing on the role of appearance and body image in people’s lives. Dr. Amy Slater, Deputy Dicrector, CAR and Professor Diana Harcourt, Director, CAR will share their expertise, cutting edge research and knowledge.

Synopsis:

Social media has become an integral part of life for most young people, with over 90% using at least one social networking site, and almost half spending over 2 hours per day on social media (Tsitsika et al., 2014). Despite having many potential benefits, research has identified that greater social media use is associated with poorer body image, which is concerning given body dissatisfaction is linked to a wide range of negative psychological and health outcomes. This webinar will focus on what we know so far about the role of social media and body image, with a particular focus on looking for the potential positive role that social media could play in how we think about ourselves and our appearance.

Dr Amy Slater

Amy Slater is an Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England.  Her research interests lie in the area of body image, specifically body image in adolescents and children.  Her research has a particular focus on the role of social media and social networking services in the body image and wellbeing of young people.  Amy completed a PhD in Clinical Psychology at Flinders University in South Australia, and in addition to her research, is also experienced with working with children and adolescents in community and hospital settings.

Professor Diana Harcourt

Diana Harcourt is Director of the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) at UWE, Bristol, the world’s largest group of psychologists researching issues around body image and appearance.  Her research interests focus on the psychosocial aspects of altered or unusual appearance, particularly those associated with cancer or burn injuries.  She completed her PhD at UWE, Bristol, exploring women’s experiences of breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Her work includes developing and evaluating interventions to support people who are negatively affected by visible difference and those facing decisions about treatment that will alter their appearance

Dr Noordin Shehabuddeen

Noordin is Director of UWE’s Bristol Business Engagement Centre (BBEC) and Associate Professor in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. His remit is to lead a range of ambitious programmes aimed at further strengthening UWE’s role as a provider of cutting edge business-relevant education and solutions, and as a thought and practice leader in innovation. He was Director of Business Engagement as well as Director of Business Incubator at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, and prior to that, Director of the University of Liverpool’s Innovation Academy. He was also a Visiting Professor with the Government of Malaysia.

Noordin has presented numerous global webinars as a keynote speaker, and over 25 K people have taken his MOOC on innovation.  He is the author of a practitioner handbook ‘Innovation in real life: a hands-on guide to genuine innovation’. He is Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

 

Bristol City Community Trust named South West Checkatrade Community club of the year

Bristol City Community Trust, who joint run the BA Sports Business and Entrepreneurship degree with UWE Bristol, will be recognised and celebrated in Parliament for their outstanding community work having been named South West Checkatrade Community Club of the Year as part of the 2018 EFL Awards.

Following the exceptional work of Bristol City Community Trust, the Club will be joined alongside five other EFL regional winners at the House of Commons on Monday 12 March to receive their awards with EFL Chairman Ian Lenagan, Sports Minister Tracey Crouch host Colin Murray all confirmed to take the stage at the event.

Bristol City will then be put forward alongside the five other regional winners for the 2018 Checkatrade Community Club of the Year Award, which will be announced at the EFL Awards on Sunday 15 April in central London.

Bristol City in the Community impressed the judges with their Youth Council, a new group of young people that deliver practical programmes to create positive social change in their local communities.

The group has so far been involved in the Bristol clean up, hosted a girls football event, developed and delivered an anti-poverty free football camp, held a free disability holiday camp, a programme to help combat Anti- Social Behaviour, developed a Mumball session and a weekly youth disability workshop.

The BA Sports Business and Entrepreneurship degree, run jointly with UWE Bristol and Bristol City Community Trust, is delivered at the newly-developed Ashton Gate Stadium and is designed for those with a passion for business and want to develop an in-depth knowledge for how to build, grow and sustain a sporting organisation.

Students will have the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by the real-life experiences of professionals from a wide variety of sports backgrounds, including Bristol City, Bristol Rugby, Bristol Flyers, Bristol Sport, as well as business and social entrepreneurs.

International Women’s Day at UWE Bristol

Come help us celebrate the entrepreneurial, political, social and cultural achievements of women, and their acts of courage and determination in the pursuit of gender parity in their workplaces, communities and countries.

To mark the day, we have planned a series of events and workshops at UWE which are all free to attend and open to all.

Alongside the events there will be stalls set up through the Atrium showcasing the amazing work that women in our region produce.

There will be a charity raffle with prizes including a Spa day from The Gainsborough Bath Spa, two tickets to the Affordable Art Fair in London, a coaching session from Sequoia Bridge as well as many more. All proceeds from the raffle will go to Bristol charity one25 who reach out to women trapped in, or vulnerable to, street sex work, supporting them to break free and build new lives away from violence, poverty and addiction. UWE Teampreneurs take part in Team 4 Learning event in Finland

At the end of January, 25 of our Teampreneurs (Team Entrepreneur Students) and 2 team coaches visited Jyväskylä, Finland to take part in a Team 4 Learning event. Teamprenuers from all Levels took part in the visit.

Team 4 Learning is a networking event for all the Teampreneurs and coaches from all over the world.

This year the event was in Jyväskylä, Finland, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Team Academy Finland.

Additionally Tiimiakatemia a coaching method used to teach Teampreneurs, was celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Launched in Finland 25 years ago, Tiimiakatemia has become a global network of more than 5000 Teampreneurs and 1300 team coaches in more than 20 countries.

The 25th anniversary provided a great opportunity for the Teampreneur community to come together to share ideas.

Our Teampreneurs had the opportunity to meet Tiimiakatemia founder, Johannes Partanen. They learnt about the history of the most influential Team Academies across the world including Tiimiakatemia, Proakatemia and Mondragon Team Academy (MTA).

They also heard from Peter Senge from MIT, who discussed the future of education.

The seminar was attended by over 200 Teampreneurs from across the globe.

Our students also participated in several workshops during their stay. This gave them the opportunity to work with other Teampreneurs and share ideas.

The whole experience was valuable for our Teampreneurs as it gave them the opportunity to share their ideas with other Teamprenuers from across the globe.

Our UWE Teampreneurs will share what they learnt with their team companies in the monthly “Where are you at?”event. There will also be a creative conversation around the event organised for the Teampreneur community at UWE.

Our UWE Teampreneurs hope to create a cross-level “international team” that promotes networking among the different Team Academies.

The Teampreneurs will be attending the MTA anniversary in Bilbao, Spain in May.

Bristol Business School and Bristol Law School Students win big at UWE Talent Awards

Every year, UWE Bristol celebrates their students and alumni with the Celebrating UWE Talent Awards.

This year, the Bristol Business School and Bristol Law School won more awards than any other Faculty by winning in five categories and also having five runners up.

Firstly, Heather Murray, a student on BA Marketing degree, won the Undergraduate Intern of the Year award for an internship at St Werburghs Community Farm. The citation from her employer noted that during the internship she  became fluent and confident in writing licence and funding applications, together with communicating excellently with a wide range of people.

The Entrepreneur of the Year Award was won by Rob Wilson, Will Dooley and Bradley Green founders of Crowdreach, a business started whilst they were students on the Business (Team Entrepreneurship) programme. This start-up business delivers a  Crowd Funding service and has delivered on over 30 projects, with one project raising 1 million dollars.

Next up, the winner of the  Social Entrepreneur award was Neha Chaudhry, a graduate of the MSc Marketing degree, who developed a walking stick which assists sufferers from Parkinson’s disease. Neha used her social enterprise as material for a number of her assessments on the MSc Marketing programme.

Philippa Borton, a final year student on BA Business and Management, won the Bristol Business School and Bristol Law School Placement Student of the Year for a placement at Boeing Defence UK. Her employers commented that she provided market analysis on a range of multi-billion pound campaigns, receiving formal recognition from executives in the UK and the US and making a valuable contribution to the business. She is currently working on a dissertation for which she collected the data whilst on placement and continues to work part-time for Boeing. Philippa has been offered a full time position with Boeing when she graduates.

Finally, Sagar Limbu,  an alumnus of the BA Business and Management and now a student on the MSc International Management, was a winner of the UWE Bristol Futures Award Student of the Year and a runner up in the International Experience Student of the Year category for an internship in China with Generation UK.

The Bristol Business School and Bristol Law School also had several runner ups in different categories across the night:

Arian Ali Ghanbari, from BA Business (Team Entrepreneurship) was a runner up in the Social Entrepreneur category for Solarnest. Arian used a UWE Enterprise grant to take part in the self-employed internship programme, building Solarnest’s brand, awareness and social media following.

Angharad Griffiths, an LLB Law student, was the runner up in the Undergraduate Intern category for an internship with Coull Ltd, who noted that she was ‘focused, efficient and always on time’ and that they are offering her a part-time role within the company.

The two runners up for the Bristol Business School and Bristol Law School Placement Student of the Year were Victoria Strange from BA Business Management with Law for a placement as Business Development Co-ordinator with Barton Wilmore and Naomi Lee from BA Business Management (Leadership, Change and Organisations) for a placement as Project Support Co-ordinator with Treves UK.

The Bristol Business School Alumni networking drinks and panel discussion on the entrepreneurial mindset

Back in December, the Bristol Business School hosted an alumni networking event at the Arnolfini which included a panel discussion that focused on the entrepreneurial mindset.

The panel was made of two alumni and was chaired by Carol Jarvis, Associate Professor in Knowledge Exchange. The first panel member was Tim Hughes, an MBA alumnus who is now a success coach. Tim was joined by Steven Curtis, who is an alumnus from the Team Entrepreneur degree and has successfully launched his own business restoring old BMWs.

The panel were asked to share their experiences and what the entrepreneurial mindset meant to them before the guests asked the panel questions.

After the panel discussion, the alumni guests were given the opportunity to network over refreshments.

Young entrepreneur aiming to save universities millions by halving drop out rate

They are a costly problem for universities, accounting for hundreds of thousands of pounds in lost tuition fees every year. But an enterprising student from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) believes he has the solution to undergraduate drop outs.

Jamie Rawsthorne, 21, has devised a system which can help universities retain more students – by identifying those most at risk of quitting their studies.

Some 7.1 per cent of first year students dropped out in 2012-13, with course dissatisfaction and financial problems among the most common reasons for new entrants leaving.

But third year student Jamie reckons he has the answer – using historic data to predict which students are most likely to abandon their courses, then providing tailored personal support to help them stay. His start-up Unique Insights is offering universities across the UK the chance to trial the sophisticated analytical software from September. At least five universities have expressed an interest in using system in the 2016-17 academic year.

Unique Insights has launched at a time when retaining students is arguably more important than ever, with the recent increase in tuition fees to £9,000 a year making drop outs far more costly for both higher education institutions and students.

The inspiration for the business emerged during a chance meeting with UWE Bristol’s Vice-Chancellor Steve West, who revealed that student retention was one of the biggest challenges facing UK universities.

Jamie, a student on the pioneering Team Entrepreneurship degree programme, said: “When I met Steve West, I knew he was an influential man and just said to him ‘What’s the biggest problem facing universities?’. With fees being paid by the student and universities’ balance sheets more dependent on student income, it’s never been more important to retain students.

“We’ve looked at universities’ historic data and at the characteristics of students – whether their chosen university was their first choice, how far they have travelled from home to go to university, which campus they are studying at, and so on. Our tool knows how influential these factors are and can give a clear prediction on the likelihood of that individual dropping out.”

Some of the most cited reasons for students dropping out are problems integrating socially, poor grades, financial issues and a lack of a relationship with the university.

Once predictive analytics have been used to highlight students most at risk of quitting, the universities will engage with those undergraduates to resolve problems or allay concerns.

If, for example, 300 students were identified as being ‘at risk’, Jamie believes his system could prevent half dropping out.

Jamie said: “Research shows that as little as 20 per cent of students who experience doubts at universities actively seek support from their university student support services. We are trying to bridge that gap and equip universities to go to them.”

Jamie’s promising business has flourished with support received on the Team Entrepreneurship course, one of a only a handful of its type in the UK dedicated to giving undergraduates a platform to start their own companies.

About 60 students a year join the ground-breaking BA (Hons) business course which was established in 2013. It was inspired by successful methods pioneered in Finland and tested in Spain and Hungary.

Each student has a tailored programme to equip them with entrepreneurial and teamwork skills ready to launch their own business or become effective team players within dynamic and changing organisations.

Jamie, who formed Unique Insights with fellow Team Entrepreneurship student George Sanderson, said he was suited to the course because he has an entrepreneurial spirit.

He said: “I was selling tickets in college and sweets in school, so I’ve always had that spirit.

“I originally wasn’t going to go to university – I told my mum and dad it wasn’t any good for entrepreneurs. When I discovered this course, my mum was really happy because she knew I was way less likely to drop out of it than if I was on a traditional degree.

“I would recommend it to those who want to jump into the unknown – but you have to have the right mindset. It’s about ‘getting out what you put in’ more than any other degree.”

Jamie is based at the MassChallenge UK accelerator programme in London, a hub for the most promising start-ups in the country who benefit from advice from world-class business mentors. From an original 2,000 applicants, Unique Insights has progressed to a final group of 26 start ups battling for a £500,000 prize.

Last year, Jamie was highly commended in the Institute of Directors‘ Student of the Year prize. The award recognises students who have implemented brilliant and innovative projects that have created tangible value for a particular audience.
