Reskilling for Research Data Management : a workshop for academic librarians

03Jan2013

The UWE JISC funded project in the MRD2 Programme is holding a day event : Reskilling for RDM : a workshop for Academic Librarians.

A key element of the UWE project is to share our experience and deliverables with the wider HE communities, with a particular focus on the Library community. The UWE project will look at how Librarians can work alongside researchers to develop their skills and knowledge. We have invited projects from the JISC MRD Train to share their tools that enable skills development for librarians.
This event will be of value to Librarians who liaise with researchers as well as those who support research output repositories, and those who provide the infrastructure of the scholarly communication processes through collections and e-resources management.

The event is free of charge to all attendees. Situated close to rail and motorway links, the University of the West of England is accessible from all parts of the UK.

Full details about the day are available here as is a booking form

Thank you so much to all of you who contributed to making UWE's MRD event yesterday so interesting and enjoyable. The speakers and attendees all helped to make the day inspiring and enormously useful. Thank you also to Liz here at UWE for her excellent organisation and execution of the day.

We are pleased that the event successfully highlighted key RDM approaches and issues and gave you opportunities to discuss RDM ideas, problems and achievements.

I drew a number of summary points from the day:

  • The problem is getting bigger
  • Data curation means different things to different institutions (and services therein)
  • There is no one-size fits all approach
  • There are many useful reports, tools and products out there for efficient and effective re-use
  • Engagement within your institution is key
  • It's easy to get sidetracked on problems that are not yours
  • Sustainability is everyone's problem
  • Working with big / research intensive institutions can be intimidating.

So don't be intimidated, be inspired!

If you attended, please do complete the evaluation you have been sent. In addition, we would be interested in any comments you have on practical actions you have taken away as a result of your attendance. Be nice to have some comments to a blog post...
