UWE Bristol, Tuesday 29th January 2013

The role of Librarians and other information professionals in the processes of managing research data have been highlighted in the recent RLUK report Reskilling for Research (RLUK, 2012), and by current JISC funded projects to develop tools and resources to enable the development of skills and knowledge among librarians.

The University of the West of England's JISC funded Research Data Management project is planning a workshop on Tuesday 29th January 2013, for information professionals to explore and discuss ways forward for their Libraries / Information Services and their institutions.

Librarians and others from HEIs which are research active but with a main focus on learning, teaching and business engagement will find this workshop particularly useful. The day will be highly participative and draw on the skills and resources being developed by several major projects.

The focus of the morning will be on identifying perceived gaps in skills and knowledge in participants' institutions in relation to RDM. There will be presentations from Laura Molloy (Digital Curation Centre) and the UWE project team. Participants will then have the opportunity to share and discuss their own situations: how librarians contribute to Research Data Management, their strengths, the gaps, who else in the institution is / should be involved in RDM.

The afternoon will focus on filling the gaps and developing RDM expertise. There will presentations by two further JISC funded projects: the RDM Rose project from Sheffield, and TRaD from UEL on tools for developing librarians' skills.

The afternoon activity will be to:
  • consider who in your organisation would be best placed to develop roles and responsibilities.
  • how participants could make use of the available tools and resources
  • how to persuade management (within the library or the wider institution) that developing librarians' skills in these areas is necessary / worthwhile, and will reward investment.
