Virtual Open Day filming

Posted by Jo Docker | 4 comments

It is a long term goal to create a virtual open day experience for prospective students and their parents. We want to showcase the many attributes that UWE has to offer. The first step is to produce campus tour films for Frenchay, Bower Ashton, and Glenside and 18 short films based on subject areas.

This suite of videos, which will cater for all our primary audiences, will be used for a number of different promotional purposes, for example they will be embedded on each departmental landing page of the University website to act as a stand-alone introduction to the department/subject area.

Things are starting to take shape

Over the last few months we have been working with a Bristol based production team on the first phase of filming for this project.

Staff in Engineering, Allied Health, Law and Education helped us to organise a set of filming days where we have interviewed academics, researchers, students and employers. We also shot a number of practical sessions to showcase teaching and learning in action.

Filming at the Faculty of Environment and Technology and Creative Industries 2013 degree shows has given us some great material which will also feed into the final subject videos.

The June Open Day gave us the perfect opportunity to shoot some footage of the general hubbub that these events attract and capture some of the fantastic activities that take place across our campuses.

The next phase of filming will begin at the start of the Autumn Term when the campuses come back to life.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in this first phase of the project. Watch this space for more updates…

Better Together Awards

Our creative, hard working teams featured in the nominations for this year's Better Together awards.  The design team were nominated for both team and individual awards whilst the UWE Stories team were shortlisted for the Vice-Chancellor's Award as a team who had gone the extra mile in their delivery of a new project to capture inspirational stories.

The events team, who were also shortlisted for an award, delivered a stylish ceremony ably abetted by Paul Gough.

We didn't win but we were up against some fierce competition and there's always next year.

Well done to the winners!

Update from the UG team

The last few months were busy in the undergraduate recruitment marketing team. Our new 2013 undergraduate prospectus arrived some weeks ago and I must say – totally subjectively, of course – it looks brilliant. The brief was to keep content short and sweet while providing all necessary information prospective students are looking for. So how did we do it?

We combined print and web elements throughout the prospectus, making sure users understand that what they’re reading here is only a ‘taster’ and there is lot more to watch and read on the web. For example, wherever relevant, tiny URLs direct the reader to a film or to more detailed information on our website.

Important data such as employability rates, university ranking and satisfaction scores are highlighted throughout the prospectus. And, as my personal favourite, at the back of the prospectus we’ve included a pretty impressive list of employers where our recent graduates have gone onto work.

If you’re still not convinced, maybe the fact that we saved £20k in print costs by just cutting down the size of the prospectus might get you excited? A big thank you to all who helped get this project done and dusted!

In line with the new prospectus look, we also ‘upgraded’ the University’s schools and colleges exhibition equipment to attract more students to the UWE stand. Students can now browse on one of the 2 tablets for specific course information or watch our inspirational student videos.

When we went to UWE’s very ‘own’ UCAS fair on 19 and 20 April, it was exciting to see how busy staff and student ambassadors were with answering all sorts of questions and using the new equipment. All in all, busy times.

YouTube make-over

Following on from the success of the official UWE Facebook page we have maintained our social media momentum by revisiting our tired and neglected YouTube channel and given it a cosmetic revamp.

Over the coming months we will be populating the channel with content conveniently organised into categories for ease of browsing. The intention is to create an informative and entertaining video resource that will support our web site and social media activity. We have a few new exciting video projects in the pipeline as well.

To celebrate the re-launch the channel is showcasing a new two minute video that was filmed and produced for us by two UWE undergraduate students from film and media courses. We asked them to capture the atmosphere of the Undergraduate Open Day. We think they have done a great job.
