UWE Single Equality Scheme consultation - can you help?

We would like to ask for your help in achieving our aspiration to become a more inclusive university for all students, staff and visitors.

We want to hear from all students, staff and members of the public on how we can make this happen.

The draft Single Equality Scheme sets out the University's commitment, equality objectives and actions based on available data and consultations to date.

Voice for all

There is one equality and diversity aim under "Voice for all".

To enable staff and students to influence decision making about provision which affects their experiences at UWE

The following key objectives have been identified in order to achieve the above.

  1. Ensure that feedback mechanisms are in place and are used to improve both academic and personal experience of students and staff

  2. Ensure that UWE’s partnership work includes those from different equality communities

Learning for all

There are three equality and diversity aims under "Learning for all".

  1. To ensure that all programmes of study and training are available to, and accessible for, all those who can benefit
  2. To take full account of the different needs of all students in the development, delivery and assessment of the curriculum
  3. To ensure that staff and students have the support they need to allow them to play a full part in the life of the University and fulfil their potential

The following key objectives have been identified in order to achieve the above.

  1. Reduce rates of withdrawal from courses beyond the first 3 months for male students, black African students and disabled students

  2. Narrow and ultimately eliminate the discrepancy in attainment between ethnic groups and international and home students

  3. Ensure teaching, learning and assessment takes into account access needs of disabled students and the cultural needs of some BME students

  4. Reduce any discrepancy in take up of graduate entry employment or further study between students of different ethnic groups and between disabled and non disabled students

  5. Ensure all tiers of management are fully aware of their responsibilities with regard to equalities in the broadest sense as well as their responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010

Positive experience for all

There are two equality and diversity aims under "Positive experience for all".

  1. To ensure that UWE’s commitment to equality is reflected in behaviour, values and practices throughout the university

  2. To promote a culture where bullying and harassment of any student or member of staff is unacceptable

The following key objectives have been identified in order to achieve the above.

  1. Increase student and staff satisfaction rates for mature students, disabled students and disabled staff and international students

  2. Eliminate harassment and bullying of all students with specific reference to black and minority ethnic students, disabled students and lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans students

  3. Eliminate harassment and bullying of all staff with specific reference to black and minority ethnic staff, disabled staff and lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans staff

  4. Address identified inequality in pay on the basis of gender, ethnicity and disability
